Will Meugniot is een der groten in de wereld van G.I. Joe, een levende legende. Gisteren deelde hij op zijn Facebook pagina een concept van Jinx, voor G.I. Joe - Rise of the Robots, een geannuleerde animatie serie waar ik nooit eerder van had gehoord... 🤷🏽♂️
Dit zei hij zelf over Jinx:
"More GI Joe development art for Rise of the Robots, this time featuring my rough design and character notes for a revamped Jinx."
Wanneer iemand in de reacties onder de afbeelding iets opmerkt over de techniek van Jinx om deuren te sluiten, zegt Meugniot:
"When you're building a character in a visual medium, these little action quirks add a lot of value."
"More" betekent overigens dat er al meer gedeeld zou zijn van Rise of the Robots, daar ben ik dan wel érg nieuwsgierig naar...💡😎
Drie dagen geleden deelde Meugniot al Tunnelrat, en de informatie dat deze geannuleerde serie uit zou monden in Sigma 6. Meugniot zegt:
"My Tunnel Rat concept sketches for GI Joe: Rise of the Robots, an unproduced series that over time morphed into Sigma 6."
Met een diepgaandere zoekopdracht wist ik nog een afbeelding op zijn pagina te vinden, een soort drieluik, waarvan Meugniot zegt:
"My celebration of all things I've done Joe-wise continues with these development sketches for a decidedly different Joe style done when Hasbro was toying with a more contemporary (circa 2003 or so) 'Tough Joe' look. This was for the unrealized Rise of the Robots storyline which morphed into Sigma Six over the course of a year and a half or so."
Op het internet is er maar weinig te vinden over G.I. Joe - Rise of the Robots. Op het forum van YoJoe vond ik een bericht die verwees naar een post in een Facebook groep. Een link die natuurlijk niet werkte, maar ik kon wel zoeken in de groep. Daar vond ik dan weer een link naar Generalsjoes, een website die offline is. Dan maar die specifieke url opzoeken op Archive.org, en wat was het resultaat?
Yes! Nog een afbeelding!
Ditmaal van het Team en hun houdingen. Deze afbeelding, samen met die van Jinx en Tunnelrat, zijn te vinden op de gearchiveerde pagina van Justin Bell. In totaal dus slechts 4 afbeeldingen van Concept art. Maar we houden de Facebook pagina van Will Meugniot goed in de gaten, en als er nog meet werk van Rise of the Robots volgt, dan delen we dat met alle liefde.

Early seeds of “Rise of the Robots” G.I. Joe theme from 2005 revealed
In many cases its merely a side conversation between a few industry guys, as what happened between animation veterans Will Meugniot and David McDermott, who apparently were involved in some early production work for the G.I. Joe animated series “Rise of the Robots” that never got produced. Those of us who were around and active during the new sculpt era have fond memories of the “Robot Rebellion” title (which apparently was a derivation of Rise of The Robots), a theme that was supposedly slated to take off after Valor Vs. Venom’s departure. Let’s not forget back then G.I. Joe was much more solidly built around a specific story. Each year’s line was complimented by a direct to DVD animated feature, and figures were a mixture of new concepts and really new versions of old characters.
As many folks now know, the seeds of The Rise of the Robots” were sewn into what would eventually become Sigma 6, much to many G.I. Joe fan’s chagrin. I know I’m exceedingly vocal about my love for Sigma 6, and it’s going to be one of my favorite era’s of G.I. Joe for the rest of my life, I imagine, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have also wanted to see what would have come through The Rise of the Robots.
Well, both Will and David were just having one of those awesome “hey, remember when Hasbro trashed that animated series we spent months developing?” conversations, and some great images and details emerged about the beginning of The Rise of the Robots, and ergo, Sigma 6. Some rough art was shown, which looks very much like Sigma 6, but also with some great new elements as well (Jinx FTW!). It’s really cool to see this, especially for many folks who have spent years hypothesizing what “might have been” after Valor Vs. Venom. Certainly the Direct To Consumer line took some of those elements (namely the Rhino, ROCC, and HISS Tank vehicles) but a lot of the central themes of this new iteration ended up in an 8″ scale.
