Tom Whalen is grafisch kunstenaar en zijn website is voor de liefhebber het checken dubbel en dwars waard. Een ongekende hoeveelheid afbeeldingen in allerhande thema's, van Transformers en Star Wars tot TMNT en Batman, het ene werk nog vetter dan de ander! Ook zijn pagina op DeviantArt is de moeite waard zal ik maar zeggen. En... ook G.I. Joe ontbreekt niet in zijn repertoire, illustraties die hij met grote liefde voor de lijn heeft gemaakt, wat voortkomt uit zijn jeugd, zo zal hieronder blijken. 👌🏽❤
Al in 2007 begon Whalen met het maken van G.I. Joe illustraties, zoals onderstaande Minibust van Snake Eyes en Storm Shadow, en later de prachtige 80's Action Cartoon Villains.
In 2010 werd Whalen gevraagd ontwerpen te maken voor Wired Magazine, en ook al is het dan niet direct G.I. Joe, ik kan er niet omheen hier de Nightraven te zien. 😉
In datzelfde jaar zou The Hub beginnen met het uitzenden van de cartoon G.I. Joe Renegades (welke we nu aan het posten zijn in ons magazine) en Whalen werd gevraagd een Cobra Propaganda Poster te ontwerpen. Deze vind ik persoonlijk echt enorm vet geworden! Hij zegt hierover:
"Having been a huge GI Joe fan since i was a kid, i was thrilled when i heard the hub (the new hasbro/discovery animated network that launched today, 10/10/10) would be rolling out a brand new 'toon called GI Joe: renegades!
I was even more thrilled when i received an e-mail from the hub's VP of creative services commissioning me to design a promotional propaganda poster featuring the show's mysterious cobra industries! i was instructed to keep it "subtly evil". hope that shows through in the final.
The poster has not yet been used, but if you happen to see it or any other materials in the near future urging you to join cobra industries, please think twice...those cats are eeeeeevil!"

"It was always a thrill checking underneath the old blotter that sat in the last booth (secret drop off spot) of my grandmother's candy store. she'd generously set aside each and every issue of the books i loved as they were released. the treasures included issues of the official handbook of the marvel universe, transformers, and most importantly, gi joe. as a kid, i'd check under that blotter religiously when i walked into the store, always sure to find some piece of 4-color gold.
as much as i loved comics and toys and animation as a child, it was the comics that had toys that had an animated series that spoke (yelled) the loudest to me. and none of those properties was more exciting than gi joe. the basic concept of military superheroes who fought a "ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world" was too much for my adolescent brain to handle. the endless hours spent reading those comics, playing with those toys and watching those animated episodes (sometimes simultaneously) had a profound effect on my imagination.
so why the sappy backstory? to illustrate what an amazingly big deal it is to me that i had the opportunity to create two covers for IDW's current ongoing gi joe series.
through a bit of misfortune on the part of trevor hutchinson, (whose laptop was hijacked, preventing him from finishing the series of five interlocking covers that he had started) i received a call from IDW's carlos guzman (with a referral from trev...thanks!) asking me to complete the series of retailer incentive covers with illustrations for issues 26 (january 2011) and 27 (february 2011). it made the deal all that much sweeter that i was allowed to draw snake eyes, my all-time favoritest 'joe.
i'm so thankful for the opportunity to revisit something that meant (means) so much to me.

"I'm so honored to have been asked to illustrate this series of interlocking retailer incentive covers for IDW's g.i. joe line of books.
Much like the snake eyes/helix covers that i did last year, these needed to be interlocking. I proposed the idea of vertically arranging them (instead of the standard horizontal layout) to IDW and they dug it.
Flint will appear on g.i. joe #10, snake eyes will be on snake eyes #10, and the baroness will grace cobra #10. All issues will be out in february, 2012.
As i've stated many times before, gi joe owned my childhood. having the opportunity to work on the comics that inspired my career is truly a dream come true.

Ook maakte Tom Whalen twee covers vooro G.I. Joe The Cobra files. En ondanks dat op zijn website bij beide grafische illustraties #1 staat, is de rode cover volgens mij eigenlijk #3. Deze heb ik dan ook online gevonden en heb ik hieronder toegevoegd.
Ook nog twee posters die ik ook weer op zijn website vond. Gemaakt voor de New York Comic Con van 2013.
Als afsluiter een special treat. In 2017 had Tom Whalen de eer om 12 verschillende covers in een maand tijd voor IDW te mogen ontwerpen. Van Judge Dread, Micronauts en Rom tot Transformers, TMNT en je raadt het al... G.I. Joe.
