Het was 24 juni 2019 en in aanloop naar de toen nog te verschijnen issue #1, van de IDW comic G.I. Joe van Paul Allor, Chris Evenhuis en Brittany Peer (e.a.), werd door Allor besloten op iedere maandag iets van een teaser op Twitter te plaatsen onder de hashtag #GIJonday. Dit is een samensmelting van G.I. Joe & Monday. Dat was het beste wat hij kon bedenken, zo bleek uit deze tweet. 😂
"Gonna start dropping some GI Joe tidbits every Monday. Hoping in the next couple hours I can come up with something better than #GIJonday."
Gelukkig draait het bij comics niet om de hashtags maar om een sterke verhaallijn en de grafische kunst welke men daarbij maakt. De covers en previews van issue #1 - 10 hebben we reeds hier samengebracht. Maar de prachtige concept art en andere teasers die de heren via Twitter deelden willen we ook graag vanuit historisch perspectief archieveren op GIJoe.nl.
Vandaar dat we hieronder, zoveel mogelijk chronologisch, een overzicht presenteren. Tof om de personages uit de comics zo clean gepresenteerd te zien. Om te lezen hoe het hoofdpersonage Tiger tot stand is gekomen is minstens zo leuk! Of wat denk je van een baby Lightfoot?!

Even though Tiger is in his early twenties, one of the big inspirations for him was Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten, a documentary about Cambodia’s pre-Khmer Rouge rock scene. I sent Chris a couple stills to show the mood I was going for, including this one. #GIJonday #GIJoe

In addition to @PaulAllor's weekly #GIJonday updates, would anyone be interested in hearing some of my thoughts/decisions that went into the new #GIJoe character designs?

So, for Tiger's design, @PaulAllor told me about Cambodia’s pre-Khmer Rouge rock scene and sent me some stills from a documentary about it.
One of them was this dude looking so effortlessly cool, I quickly decided on the James Dean-inspired red jacket. Part of Tiger's backstory was now that he used to be in a rock band. I also wanted to have him smoke cigarettes, but that was understandably a no-go.

Very brief #GIJonday today, since I have a rewrite pile-up! Here's a closer look at SCARLETT and DUKE. From my notes to Chris on Scarlett: "Head instructor of #GIJoe, w/Duke. Scarlett is tough, incredibly well-trained and has an undertone of rage that she keeps in careful check."

I just wrapped up my work on #BadDayatBlackRock and still very much had #WynonnaEarp on the mind when designing Scarlett.
So my mind immediately went to "Brawler Scarlett" and started there. Initially basing the color scheme around her classic green/yellow combo. I drew two guns here, but considered her fists to be her primary weapon.
I've been wanting to draw this hair for ages. Used it in my design for the (then) upcoming new Wynonna Earp series (this was before the TV show started production, in 2015). Then later on for a side character in WE, who I ended up never getting to draw myself (except on covers).
Just to fight Earp-withdrawal, my one request to Paul was to have at least one scene of "Scarlett taking off that Jacket (to reveal a sleeveless turtleneck sweater and brawler arms underneath) before getting into a fistfight".

First, a new character with a familiar look. Here's FRONTIER. A veteran of Pakistan's Frontier Corps, more recently a teacher in Chicago. Now a field leader in the battle against Cobra. #GIJoe

A veteran of Pakistan's Frontier Corps, Frontier became the field team leader character we introduced when it was decided early on that we weren't going to use Flint.
We liked Flint, though, and we were aware he has a lot of fans.
So @PaulAllor suggested we bring over Flint's beret over to Frontier. I decided to take it further: kept the black shirt and gloves as well; turned his bullet belts into suspenders and as a friendly nod to his fans, drew him in his iconic pose from the original toy packaging.

I have different plans for Shipwreck (and his beard), when his time comes! Meanwhile, I basically gave Frontier my favorite beard shape to draw.
And rounding out our team is FADEAWAY, another new character. Once, she was a coder... for COBRA TECHNOLOGIES. Now she fights against them, in the ranks of #GIJoe!
